How I Rang In The New Year 2013

If you happened to read my last (which was also my first…) blog post, you know that I recently had the great opportunity of shooting the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, NY.

New Year’s Eve in Times Square is one of the largest celebrations in the world, with an estimated 1 million people in attendance and over 1 BILLION watching worldwide. Throughout the day leading up to midnight, there are a number of celebrity and musical appearances on multiple stages, which stretch from 2 Times Square across to 1 Times Square (where the ball drops from) .

My photography job for the night was split into two main parts…  Time Square until the famous NYC New Years Eve Ball Drop, then off to a high-profile after-party at The Hard Rock Cafe.

Now that all of my images have been turned over to the client, I thought I’d share a brief summary of the day(s) and some of my favorite shots.  I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoy creating them.

Organization is key!

With everything all packed up and ready to go the night before, and a 20-hour-stretch ahead of me, I made sure to get some serious rest the night before.

I’d planned for some stop-and-go traffic along the way; my trip to midtown usually takes around 1.5 hours, but it took twice that to get where I needed to be to grab a bite to eat and pick up my fancy, bedazzled credential (sequins = important?).

And the Hard Rock credential to access the after party…

Fancy or not, these passes are the root of all good things for anyone excited to get to work the center stage at one of the most-watched New Year’s Eve events in the world. NYPD does not mess around when it comes to securing events, and accessing any of the designated media and safety lanes without the proper identification is nearly impossible. In fact, even with multiple passes and a colorful wrist band, I was stopped a number of times by police officers who were making sure that the passes were not fakes. Although it is a hassle to deal with on such a tight schedule, the security put in place is crucial to making sure everything runs smoothly (and safely).

YOU SHALL NOT PASS. NYPD barricades block pedestrians and traffic from entering Times Square at the intersection of 7th Ave. and 41st Street.

Once I got settled into Times Square and got a bite to eat, it was about 3:00. I photographed the crowd from every street intersection in Times Square from multiple angles, and by 5:30, I needed to start making my way up to the roof of 1 Times Square for the lighting of the ball. From then on, the night was non-stop running around so below is a set of images in chronological order from start to finish. Enjoy
