Lime Rock Park says goodbye to GRAND-AM

Much like 2012, Lime Rock Park played host during the final championship race of the GRAND-AM series for 2013. Unlike last year, however, this was the final GRAND-AM race ever to be held. With the creation of the United SportsCar Championship series for 2014, which combines GRAND-AM and ALMS into one, there will be many changes in the sport over the next few years. One of the most unfortunate changes to be made is that Lime Rock Park is not on the United SportsCar Series calendar for 2014, which I was very sad to hear about last week.

I first started photographing racing at Lime Rock back in 2009 and since then have had the great fortune of being able to spend many weekends at the track covering a wide variety of racing, from the national events to vintage fest and club days. Despite it’s relatively small size, Lime Rock really is unlike any other track in the Northeast. The atmosphere of the events and the incredible hospitality that the track has shown me over the past few years has been absolutely incredible. With the 2013 season pretty much wrapped up I’m already looking forward to seeing what great events Lime Rock puts together next year. I would like to personally thank Lime Rock for all they have done and will continue to do to ensure that this region gets its fair share of racing action.

Now on to the photography…One of the challenges of photographing at the same location for a while is that it gets pretty easy to keep taking the same shots from the same locations over and over again. You learn what does and doesn’t work and start to develop a comfort zone and a subconscious list of all the shots to get. Since I’ve covered this event for the last few years, I decided to spend more time searching for different angles and unique perspectives rather than just hitting the safe spots. This meant spending a lot of time moving through the woods and using the practice sessions and qualifying to experiment quite heavily. I eventually found a small gap in the trees which allowed me to get what ended up being my favorite shot from the race. This is a very small selection of images from the event but I think it gives a good overview. More images will be added to the main portfolio over the coming months.
